Warning of dangerous Vitaccino coffee.

The Rhineland-Palatinate State Examination Office warns of the health-threatening consequences of a type of coffee. According to the investigation office, the dangerous coffee is sold in several sports and fitness studios and on the Internet in online shops. The instant coffee from the brand "Vitaccino" contains the prohibited active ingredient sibutramine.

Sibutramine is actually an active pharmaceutical ingredient and was first used in 1999 to treat obesity. However, the drug with the active ingredient sibutramine was stopped again by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, since a long-term study showed that there was no significant weight loss among the test subjects. On the contrary, the active ingredient can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. At the time, the scientific committee of inquiry concluded: "The results of this study show that for overweight patients with additional risk factors, taking sibutramine is associated with an increased risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke." The distribution of the drug was then stopped in the European Union. However, it is even less permitted to use the active ingredient in food.

Now the banned active ingredient in the coffee type "Instant Coffee Vitaccino" from the manufacturer Imperia Elita, based in Wettenberg, was found during a food inspection. The company has since recalled the product imported from China from the market. The Rhineland-Palatinate State Investigation Office still warns against the consumption of coffee, because it is still sold in sports studios. "People have died in the past from the side effects of the active ingredient," warned a government spokeswoman on Monday. Because the appetite suppressant is particularly dangerous for people with heart diseases.

The company "Imperia Elita" announced on its website that consumers "should no longer consume existing goods". The company defends itself by arguing that coffee had been assessed in terms of food law before it entered the German market. There was no complaint at the time. However, an investigation by the official laboratory for food surveillance discovered the prohibited substance. As a result, the type of coffee was recalled from the market. According to the state investigation office, the offices had become aware of the coffee because a man from Karlsruhe complained about heavy palpitations and dilated pupils after consumption. As a result, the person concerned alerted the authorities.

The coffee was not only sold in Rhineland-Palatinate, but also in other federal states. How many packs are still in circulation in Germany cannot be quantified exactly. Selling coffee could still have legal ramifications for the company. As the state investigation office announced, the public prosecutor was informed of the findings. (sb, 10/12/2010)
