Diet lemonade and too much salt increase the risk of stroke and heart attack
Those who drink a lot of diet soda or cola increase the risk of having a stroke or heart attack. US researchers at the University of Miami found this out in a survey study. The risk of cardiovascular disease increased by 61 percent with regular consumption.
Many people resort to diet soft drinks to reduce or maintain body weight. However, the low-calorie drinks increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases if diet drinks are consumed daily. This is the finding of scientists from the "University of Miami" in a survey study with a total of 2564 participants.
For more than nine years, the researchers examined consumption behavior and the onset of vascular disorders. It turned out that those who drank a lot and often diet soda had a 61 percent higher risk of getting sick. However, the scientists were unable to explain why this is the case. The study author Hannah Gardener summed up that diet drinks in all likelihood do not offer an optimal substitute for sugary drinks in order to reduce the risk of heart and vascular diseases. In the course of the observational study, contrary conclusions were reached.
The scientists presented the study results at the global stroke conference in Los Angeles. During the long-term study, a total of 559 cases of vascular damage were diagnosed among the 2564 participants. To limit the data, other harmful factors were taken into account. This included alcohol consumption, cigarette consumption, diet, lifestyle and sport.
High salt consumption damages the cardiovascular system
But not only diet soft drinks harm the vessels. During the conference, the researchers presented another study involving a total of 2657 subjects. The scientists around Hannah Gardener took a closer look at the daily salt consumption. Here, too, it was shown that excessive salt consumption increases the risk of vascular diseases. People who consumed over ten grams of salt (four grams of sodium) a day were at twice the risk of stroke compared to those who only consumed four grams a day. Afterwards, the research team was amazed that too much salt harmed people. In any case, the risk of developing a stroke increases, even if there are no underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, according to Gardener.
The U.S. health organization and government agencies recommend a maximum daily salt intake of six grams. A healthy adult only needs 2 g to 3 g of table salt per day. In western industrialized countries, however, daily consumption is often exceeded. Sometimes people consume up to 12 grams a day. This is mainly due to the fact that many fast foods and convenience foods already have a high salt content. Health experts therefore advise against the additional salting of food as far as possible. The daily requirement of 3 g of table salt (NaCl) corresponds to approximately 1 level teaspoon and contains 1.2 g of sodium (Na).
