Tap water quality better than still mineral water

Tap water is apparently often considered to be inferior for no reason. The Stiftung Warentest examined the quality of still mineral water and found that it is usually no higher than that of tap water. According to the testers, a large part of the still mineral water examined had an insufficient mineral content. Many bottles also contained germs that can be problematic for immunocompromised people and small children.

According to the results of the Stiftung Warentest, tap water is on average of significantly higher quality than still mineral water. In particular, the low mineral content of the still mineral water gave the testers cause for criticism. This is not enough to compensate for the loss of minerals during sports. Only one of the still mineral water tested had a mineral content that could make a notable contribution to the supply of calcium to the bones and the muscles with magnesium. "Some still mineral waters contain so little mineral substances that it is better and above all cheaper to drink tap water", the Stiftung Warentest concluded.

Many still mineral water unsuitable as a thirst quencher after sport The Stiftung Warentest has subjected 29 still mineral water, 14 from manufacturer brands and 15 own brands from discounters to an intensive examination. The price range of the tested products was between 13 cents and more than 50 cents per liter. Regardless of the price, there were considerable deficits in the mineral water content of the still mineral water, reports the Stiftung Warentest. Above all, the low sodium content is high in almost all products. 24 of the 29 still mineral waters examined contained very little sodium, although some manufacturers use this shortcoming as an additional selling point and use the label "low sodium" to attract customers who have difficulty with their blood pressure. Because with high blood pressure, those affected must pay particular attention to their sodium intake. However, since a lot of sodium is excreted during sweating, an adequate thirst quencher for athletes should in any case contain sufficient amounts of this important mineral.

No legal requirements for the mineral content in mineral water The low mineral content of the still mineral water does not seem to stand in the way of its growing popularity. According to the Stiftung Warentest, sales figures rose by 14 percent in 2011 and still mineral water is increasingly becoming a trend drink. The term “mineral water” is by no means an indication of the ingredients. Because since the EU has stipulated that mineral water does not have to have a high mineral content, more and more products have come onto the market that contain only negligible amounts of the minerals. Previously, this was prevented in Germany by corresponding legal requirements regarding the minimum content of minerals in mineral water.

Germ contamination of the mineral water In addition to the low mineral content of the still mineral water, other points also gave the testers cause for criticism. For example, more than a third of the still mineral water tested contained germs that could lead to health problems in people with weakened immune systems and in babies. Although no applicable limit values were exceeded, in case of doubt the water should be boiled to avoid any health risks, reports the Stiftung Warentest.

The experts also examined the still mineral water for residues from the plastic bottles in which it is sold. However, according to the Stiftung Warentest, the corresponding exposure to acetaldehyde is declining compared to previous studies. Only six of the still mineral waters examined still contained acetaldehyde residues. (fp)
