No habituation effects with LASIK
Many people find their ametropia a burden. Not least because of their glasses, which more than 60 percent of Germans need to see clearly. All the more annoying when the impression arises that despite annoying visual aids, eyesight continues to deteriorate. The belief persists that visual aids impair vision. In fact, glasses wearers only get used to sharp vision. Those who do not want to indulge in this direct comparison and also want more independence from glasses will find the possibility of a glasses-free life in the surgical correction of ametropia.
"Glasses in no way affect how a person's eyesight changes," says Dr. Kaweh Schayan-Araghi from Artemis Eye Clinic Frankfurt and board member of the Professional Association of Ophthalmologists in Germany (BVA) clearly. “It neither worsens nor improves eyes. Because it is not the eyes that get used to the glasses, but the wearer of the sharp vision ”. For example, patients usually do not even know how badly they actually see before putting on their new glasses. Only with the glasses do they get an idea of what 100 percent visual acuity means. This immediate comparison leads to the feeling when taking off the glasses that one can see less than before without visual aids.
"If you are fundamentally disturbed by wearing glasses, refractive surgery - surgery for ametropia - offers an alternative without glasses," explains Dr. Schayan-Araghi. The special LASIK laser correction, for example, is a proven and good solution for correcting ametropia. Prerequisite: the patient's cornea is suitable for laser eye correction, eye growth is complete and ametropia has been stable for more than a year. As a scientifically recognized intervention, LASIK corrects myopia up to minus ten, farsightedness up to three and astigmatism up to approximately minus four diopters. Developed continuously over the past 20 years, there are now many different options for laser eye correction. Today, however, Femto-LASIK is the method of choice. With the Femto-Laser, doctors create a corneal lamella that, when folded aside, clears the way for the actual laser eye correction - the treatment of the inside of the cornea. Since the laser works extremely precisely and cuts a very even and thin corneal lamella, this process is particularly gentle on the tissue. On the one hand, this means more safety for patients and, on the other hand, that LASIK can also be carried out with severe myopia and thin corneas. Subsequently, surgeons remove as much tissue in the lower layers of the cornea until the refractive power in the eye changes optimally and the ametropia is eliminated. Then they fold back the corneal lamella, which automatically absorbs itself and acts as the body's own plaster. "From this moment on, glasses and contact lenses are a thing of the past, and thus getting used to them - including the false impression that, despite annoying visual aids, vision deteriorates," summarizes Dr. Schayan-Araghi together.
