Lawsuit against pharmaceutical giant for cervical cancer vaccine

An 18-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Pasteur for negligent bodily harm and misleading advertising. Three other young women will also go to court, said Camille Kouchner on Sunday evening. The lawsuit relates to the "Gardasil" vaccine, which is used against cervical cancer.

The young woman, suffering from multiple sclerosis, had reproached the company for serious side effects. In the past, the vaccine has been linked to several deaths and thousands of negative reactions. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends young women to be vaccinated against cervical cancer, although the drug has been under discussion in Germany for a long time because of possible side effects. "Gardasil" has been approved in the Federal Republic of Germany since September 2006. In the past, patients in France have increasingly asked for compensation for treatment accidents caused by this drug. In March 2012, a parliamentary commission had already launched further investigations.

According to a report by the regional newspaper "Sud Ouest", in the case of the 18-year-olds, an opinion of the regional compensation commission of the region of Aquitaine in the south-west of France found a connection between the vaccinations and the girl's illness. Three other women between the ages of 20 and 25 who are also seeking a lawsuit are suffering from hidradenitis - a chronic skin disease - and the muscle disease polymyositis that has occurred as a result of the vaccinations.

The lawyers of the three young women said that the pharmaceutical company Sanofi Pasteur MSD will face even more lawsuits. More and more young women report that they have serious side effects. The pharmaceutical company had denied on Sunday that there was an actual connection between the vaccinations and the 18-year-old's disease from multiple sclerosis. If there was a connection, another drug scandal could be enormous. (fr)
